A Few More Rambles

Hey, everyone. Just picking up where I left off with the newsletter. I wrote about a concept art/illustration piece I did for a film client. I thought, maybe I would expand on what I wrote in the newsletter on Linkedin. It’s called the Rich T. Newsletter. If you’re connected with me on Linkedin, you can subscribe to it, where I write about working in the film industry or working as an illustrator.
Anyway, just to get back on track. Reflections and thoughts. What else can I can write about? Maybe I’m tapped out, spent, nothing else to expand on. I guess, it’s a fun gig, eh? Getting paid to draw, which is like getting paid to have fun. It’s not a chore, but focus and try to tap into everything you’ve seen, soaked up, tapping into your influences, flexing your creative muscles, whether drawing storyboards, illustrations or recording/writing music. Don’t want to rehash what I wrote before in the newsletter about this job, so if I was to give any advice to anyone that wants to be an illustrator or a storyboard artist, is to always draw, practice your drawing chops, whether you’re drawing people on the street or in a life drawing class. And keep studying the greats, whether they are filmmakers or comic book artists. Definitely watch a lot of movies and study the great filmmakers. Right now, I am watching a slew of films online from the latest releases to the films of Fellini, Truffaut, Ridley Scott and Spike Lee. Have you seen Malcolm X? Check out the beginning of the film. Ernest Dickerson on the cinematography. I never saw anything as brilliant as those first few shots, the lighting illuminating those scenes. You start to think about color and lighting next to composition and transition of shots.
Guess that’s about it. Stay tuned for more in March. Finishing up another illustration job for a client and just networking. Will keep you in the loop of what going down and talk to you soon. Until then stay cool !
