Afternoon, folks. Hope you are enjoying the weekend. Last day of summer, as I’m typing these words on my iPad.
So, picking up where I left off from last month’s blog, going to riff a bit more on this storyboard/concept art job I did for Whiteshell Films. For the photo that I am using for this blog, this is a high angle shot of my work for the film. You can see the panel layouts and the artwork in the beginning stages. Just pencils and some non photo blue before the inks. Bit of a medium shot and a full shot, upside down. Had an idea of what I wanted to do in terms of a visual style that would work for the project. Something in a cartoon/comic book vein. No realism, a pop visual style.
Will be posting some more work from this job in the near future. Anything else? As an artist, I like to work in a variety of styles or genres. I admire artists like Wally Wood or Jack Kirby that drew so many types of comic books, whether they were superheroes, westerns, romance, humor, horror or science fiction. When I work on a project or when I get a script from a client, I try to get an idea as to what visual style would fit the overall aesthetic of the project. Start referencing certain artists or styles of art for inspiration. Even film or filmmakers too.
I also keep a couple of a morgue file notebooks filled with cut out photos from magazines to use as references. If you need to draw, let’s say a long shot of an outdoor scene, you have a photo of a specific scene that you need. Another great alternative source is googling images online for references.
Well, guess that’s about it for now. By Sunday, it will be autumn. Looking forward to the new season and talk to you soon!
